Firefly Aerospace and ispace to Launch Two Lunar Landers on a Single Rocket
In a historic first for lunar exploration, two robotic landers from different nations will launch to the Moon on the same rocket. Texas-based Firefly Aerospace and Tokyo-based ispace will share a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for their respective missions, each taking unique paths and timelines to reach the lunar surface.
The launch is scheduled from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 15 at 1:11 a.m. EST. It will be the 100th orbital launch for SpaceX from Launch Complex 39A. Weather conditions are favorable for liftoff, with a 90 percent chance of clear skies, although winds could be a concern.
Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander will carry 10 NASA science payloads to the Moon, making it the most payload manifested on a single lander as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) Program. The mission, named 'Ghost Riders in the Sky,' will deploy instruments such as the Lunar PlanetVac and the Regolith Adherence Characterization.
On the other hand, ispace's Resilience lander will target a touchdown in Mare Frigoris, Northern Moon. The mission, 'Never Quit the Lunar Quest,' will demonstrate electrolysis and carry a small rover called Tenacity to explore the lunar surface, including an art installation called the 'Moon House.'
Both landers will operate on the Moon for about two weeks, with plans to withstand lunar night conditions to enable long-term surface operations. By incorporating lessons learned from previous missions and sharing expertise within their respective companies, Firefly and ispace aim to achieve successful and innovative lunar missions on this unprecedented joint venture to the Moon.
