Historic Palisades Structures Destroyed by Fires; Preservationists Express Grief
The recent Palisades and Eaton fires have ravaged over 30 historic structures, marking one of the worst losses of architectural treasures in the region's history, according to experts. Ken Bernstein, a principal city planner at Los Angeles City Planning’s Office of Historic Resources, lamented the widespread destruction of significant landmarks that communities cherish.
Notable losses include Will Rogers’ former ranch home, the Bunny Museum, and the Zane Grey Estate. The Los Angeles Conservancy reported that 32 properties of cultural importance were consumed by the fires. Some, like Altadena’s Zane Grey Estate and Rogers’ Palisades home, had landmark status, while others, such as Fox’s Restaurant and Theatre Palisades, were beloved community spaces.
In Altadena, Zorthian Ranch and the Bunny Museum, havens for free spirits and counterculture figures, were also devastated. The destruction of these sites erases a significant part of the region's history connected to raising social consciousness for positive change. Altadena's losses include the Andrew McNally House, known for its stunning Turkish room, and the Zane Grey Estate, a significant architectural and literary landmark.
On the coast, the Palisades also faced a mixture of private and public losses, with Rogers’ ranch house being one of the most impacted. Built by the legendary entertainer in the 1920s, the residence housed a collection of western memorabilia and artwork. The Palisades’ Business Block, an iconic shopping plaza, was severely damaged.
The devastating fires have highlighted the vulnerable state of historic landmarks in the face of extreme climate events. As preservationists strive to assess the full extent of the damage, the loss of these cultural touchstones serves as a stark reminder of the constant threat to cherished architectural and historical treasures in Southern California.
