President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering options to save TikTok when he takes office on January 20, just one day after the deadline for the Chinese-owned social media app to sell to a U.S.-based company or face a ban.
The platform, used by over 170 million people in the U.S. monthly, faces going offline on Sunday, January 19, unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes or ByteDance strikes a deal to sell it.
Trump is contemplating an executive order to prevent the enforcement of the ban, as reported by the Washington Post. He has also asked the Supreme Court to pause the ban to allow for negotiations upon his return to the White House.
The ban stems from bipartisan legislation citing national security concerns due to ByteDance’s ties to the Chinese government. If the ban is upheld, TikTok could go dark on Sunday, pending Supreme Court intervention.
