Deputy PM states Malta is a crucial partner of Qatar in shipping and aviation



Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta H E Dr. Ian Borg visits Qatar to explore opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, focusing on tourism and economic exchange. The meetings between Malta and Qatar have shown promising outcomes, with a commitment to fostering closer ties and increasing connectivity to benefit both countries.



During his visit, Dr. Ian Borg met with Qatari officials, including Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, to discuss bilateral trade growth in sectors such as finance and hospitality. Malta and Qatar are set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, planning special programmes and visits to mark the occasion.



Malta also looks forward to assuming the presidency of the European Committee of Ministers at the Council of Europe in 2025, focusing on addressing regional challenges such as migration, security, and human rights protection. The growing unrest in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza and Syria, poses significant concerns for Malta and Europe, impacting humanitarian crises and security implications.



Existing cooperation between Malta and Qatar can be expanded in trade, tourism, education, and energy sectors. Both countries are exploring opportunities for investments and joint ventures to strengthen economic ties. Several agreements are in the pipeline to bolster bilateral relations, with a focus on tourism initiatives to increase people-to-people contacts.



As the Minister for Tourism, Dr. Ian Borg aims to promote bilateral tourism through targeted marketing campaigns in Qatar, highlighting Malta's cultural heritage and attractions. Strengthening air connectivity and promoting joint tourism initiatives will enhance visibility and attract more visitors from both countries.
