An Outdoor Space that is 'Radically Inclusive' for LGBTQ+ and People of Color

Participants Enjoy Snowboarding with Hoods to Woods Foundation at Big Snow American Dream

On June 13, 2024, participants engaged in snowboarding activities at Big Snow American Dream in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with the Hoods to Woods Foundation, a nonprofit focused on introducing inner-city children to the outdoors through snowboarding.

For 16-year-old Zyshawn Gibson, the experience was a refreshing break from his usual routine. The foundation, founded by Omar Diaz and Brian Paupaw, aims to provide opportunities for underserved youth and has successfully introduced hundreds of participants like Gibson to the sport over the past 15 years.

Gibson expressed gratitude for the chance to try something new and stay away from the dangers of the streets. The organization covers all costs for the youth involved, including lessons, transportation, and meals. Through partnerships with facilities like Big Snow, the foundation is able to offer these experiences at no charge to its participants.
